Christopher Nolan’s mysterious upcoming project has been revealed, with the director set to adapt a classic poem from Ancient Greece.
It was announced in October that the acclaimed filmmaker was planning his follow-up to Oppenheimer, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron all signing up for the project.
After months of secrecy, Universal Pictures has now confirmed via X/Twitter that the project is titled The Odyssey, with the film serving as an adaptation of the 8th century poem by Homer.

“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” reads the post. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theatres everywhere on July 17, 2026.”
Homer’s Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he journeys home following the decade-long Trojan War. In his long venture home, the hero encounters many mythical creatures as he aims to be by the side of his wife, Penelope.

Whilst the title and subject matter has now been confirmed, it is still unknown who each star will be playing, though the fact that Damon – who also starred in Oppenheimer – was the first cast member who was announced could potentially point to him being the lead.

Holland, best known for his roles in the Spider-Man and Uncharted franchises, recently spoke of his experience getting cast in The Odyssey, likening the excitement to the moment he discovered he would play Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“When the opportunity came in, it was the phone call of a lifetime,” he said. “[It was] reminiscent of getting that call about Spider-Man 10 years ago. It's an amazing thing for me. I'm super proud and I'm really, really excited.”
The Odyssey is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 17, 2026.
