The Weekend Away spoilers follow.

Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester has opened up about the ending of new Netflix crime thriller The Weekend Away, and how it differs from its source material.

The new film follows two women, Beth (Meester) and Kate (Christina Wolfe), who embark on a girls' trip to Croatia. However, Kate is murdered, with Beth subsequently embarking on a hunt to find the culprit.

After twists and turns, it is revealed that the murderer is Beth's own husband Rob (Luke Norris), who had been having an affair with Kate.

However, while the killer is the same in Sarah Alderson's original novel, the ending circumstances are different as, in the book, Rob manages to escape with their daughter after Beth discovers he is behind the murder.

What to Read Next

In the movie, Beth learns that he is the killer when she finds one of Kate's necklace beads in his pocket. She contacts the police and confronts her husband, who confesses – but lies that Kate had begged them to get back together after their affair.

In truth, she rejected him and he pushed Kate off the cliff, and while he says he assumed she was dead when she hit the rocks, she was actually left to drown. In the end, Rob is arrested after Beth manages to fight him off.

Speaking on the change-up, Meester suggested to Newsweek that the different ending gives the movie a "newer meaning".

"I think the other part of it that makes it more cinematic is the tension [between Rob and Beth] but then also truly this sort of undercurrent of tension with the police, and in general, anybody that Beth interacts with, that makes her feel like she has to scream, to be heard and to be listened to and believed.

"So I think that [ending] is giving it even a newer meaning and just trying also not to like, give it away," she added.

The actress went on to call the ending "bittersweet", noting: "There'd be no happy ending truly because there's a lot that's happened and that is incredibly tragic.

"I think what she can hopefully do is start to put the pieces together of what her life will from now on, but there is no really happy ending."

The Weekend Away is streaming now on Netflix.
