Ryan Murphy's 1980s-set thriller, The Shards, has gotten an official release date from FX and Disney+. The upcoming series will arrive on the streaming service on 6 August in the UK, a day after its US premiere.

Adapted from the 2023 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the story follows a group of wealthy teenagers at an elite prep school in Los Angeles. When charming new student Robert Mallory moves to town, he quickly becomes the centre of attention.

However, not everyone is pleased by Robert's arrival - which coincides with the emergence of a local serial killer. Senior student Bret then begins to spiral, as he tries to expose Robert's increasingly shady behaviour.

"Bret's obsession with Mallory is equalled only by his increasingly unsettling preoccupation with The Trawler, a serial killer on the loose who seems to be drawing ever closer to Bret and his friends," teases the synopsis.

Igby Rigney leads the series as Bret, while Homer Gere plays Robert. The cast is rounded out by Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, Graham Campbell, Evan Rachel Wood, Wes Bentley and Jordan Roth.

The Shards is said to kick off a "summer of suspense, seduction and obsession" for Disney+, with the series being dubbed "a fusion of the voices of two of America's most provocative storytellers".
