The Diplomat has added an exciting, familiar face to its cast for season three.

Rivals and Poldark star Aidan Turner will appear in the upcoming third instalment, which arrives on Netflix on 16 October.

No details have been shared about Turner's character and how he'll fit into the political thriller, but Netflix has confirmed he'll appear as a recurring guest star.

The Being Human star is one of two exciting new cast additions for season three, with Bradley Whitford also joining the show.

Whitford will play husband Todd Penn to Alison Janney's Vice President Grace Penn, who joined The Diplomat last season. It marks an on-screen reunion for Janney and Whitford, who previously starred together in The West Wing.

Once again, Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell return to lead the action as Kate and Hal Wyler, with Bank of Dave's Rory Kinnear back as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, in addition to David Gyasi's Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison.

Season three will pick up not long after the events of last season's dramatic finale, with Kate and Hal working together to see Kate land the vice presidency.

Relations between Kate and Vice President Grace Penn are frosty given that Kate is after Penn's job and Kate recently accused her of hatching a terrorist plot. Nevertheless, she seems to strike up a bond with Penn's husband Todd (Whitford).

As ever, her friendship with Foreign Secretary Dennison remains "increasingly complicated".

Fans can also expect to see their favourite aides back on screen as Ali Ahn reprises her role as Eidra Graham, while Nana Mensah returns as White House chief of Staff Billie Appiah.

Both seasons of The Diplomat have faired well with critics, in particular season two, which holds a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96%. The Guardian hailed the show as a "masterclass", while Rolling Stone praised the cast, "snappy" dialogue and "inventive" plot.

The Diplomat seasons 1-2 are available to stream now on Netflix. Season 3 lands on Netflix on 16 October.
