Netflix has confirmed the cast for The Age of Innocence, a new period drama based on the classic novel of the same name.

The upcoming limited series adapts Edith Wharton's 1920 book, with the story being described as a "delicious portrait of forbidden love and lust in Gilded Age New York society" (via Tudum).

In a first casting announcement, the streamer confirmed that Daisy Jones & The Six star Camila Morrone will be starring as Ellen Olenska, alongside The Buccaneers' Kristine Froseth as May Welland, and Masters of the Air actor Ben Radcliffe as Newland Archer.

Justified's Margo Martindale is also joining the cast as Mrs Manson-Mingott.

"The Age of Innocence follows a passionate and heartrending will-they-or-won’t-they love triangle while exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity, and love in all its forms," reads the logline.

What to Read Next

"The new take promises to be true to Wharton’s novel but will speak to a new generation as it traverses the ballrooms and bedrooms of its young characters, asking what is love – and what is lust. And should we ultimately be driven by our heads, or by our hearts?"

The series has been created and written by Emma Frost, with Shannon Murphy directing the first three episodes. Lisa Brühlmann and Natalia Leite will serve as directors for the remaining episodes.

Wharton's novel has been adapted several times, with the most famous adaptation coming in 1993 from acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Daniel Day-Lewis starred as Newland, with Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder in supporting roles.

The book has been lauded by critics and readers, with one describing it as "utterly brilliant and poignant" as they wrote (via GoodReads): "All so intelligently and brilliantly handled. The fact is, I could barely put it down."

"Upon reading The Age of Innocence for a third time, I can confirm that I would give it 100 stars if only I could. Over the last year, this book has slowly crept up to become one of my all-time favourites," added another user.

The Age of Innocence has no release date.
