George Knight has responded to the speculation surrounding his sudden departure from Love Island, addressing viewer theories about his exit and reacting to criticism he received during his brief stint in the villa.
The semi-professional footballer left the ITV2 dating show just days after entering as a bombshell alongside Yasmin Hadlow. At the time, Love Island confirmed that George had left the villa for "private reasons," while George later told fans on Instagram that he was putting his family first.
However, his departure quickly became the subject of online speculation among viewers, with some of them questioning whether there had been another reason behind his exit. Speaking to The Sun's Showbiz Fix podcast, George explained that he was informed of a family health concern while filming and decided returning home was the right move.

Recalling the moment he was pulled aside by producers, George said he initially expected a routine chat before being told senior producers wanted to speak with him, which immediately raised alarm bells. "I was thinking, 'oh God, what could this be about?' Once the execs put you in, you don’t see them again, really," he said.
He then recalled that his parents had contacted the show personally and wanted him to be made aware of a situation involving an immediate family member. "They said that my parents had been in touch and that they had some news for me and that they were going to give me a call," George shared.

"They said they felt like they weren’t doing their role as a parent if they didn’t let me know. And with what was said, I just felt like it was the right thing to come home." George added that "there was no second guessing" his decision, despite its sudden nature. "I was obviously aware (of the health issue), but it was not something that we needed to concern ourselves about in the eight week period that I could have been away or even longer than that."
The former bombshell also addressed one of the more unusual theories that emerged online after his Love Island exit. Some fans of the series had speculated that George and his family may have agreed on a secret code that could be used to remove him from the show if things weren't going well – but George dismissed the theory. "What a load of nonsense," he said.
While he said he had been overwhelmed by supportive messages from fans, George admitted that not every reaction had been positive. "For every 15 nice messages, you get one that is just vile. Like it’s horrible," George lamented. But this also prompted him to respond to comments made about his appearance.
When his cast photo was released ahead of his debut, some viewers compared him to fictional characters in the likes of Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter, while Love Island Aftersun panellist Toni Laites drew criticism after referring to him as a "jumpscare".
George said he was surprised when he discovered the comments, but appeared to take the situation in stride. "It’s funny because one of my best friends I’ve known for a long time, his girlfriend is Toni’s manager. So I think that was a bit of an awkward one," he said. "I’ve been called so many worse, horrible things on a football pitch and by fans my entire life. So getting called a jump scare, I mean, it doesn’t really bother me."
Love Island continues weeknights from 9pm on ITV2.
