He is the man who's dug deep into Scientology, sex trafficking and even racism within the police.

Though according to Louis Theroux's latest tweet, there is one terrible trouble in the world where his fear kills his curiosity – so-called Islamic State.

In an online Q&A that stemmed from the hashtag #asklouis on Twitter, Louis revealed how he wants to steer clear of making a film about IS for the foreseeable future.

"I would have been very curious to see what was going on in the Islamic State. I find religious extremism really bizarre, but also fascinating," he explained in the tweeted video clip.

"But, I think it was mainly fear that prevented me going over there."

"I've seen too much about journalists being taken hostage and being beheaded, so I steered clear of that one."

The filmmaker had already revealed last year that he wanted to make a documentary looking into the "growing world of ISIS sympathisers" – but said it wasn't happening.

And who can blame him? Louis has lived beyond his comfort zone on many occasions prior to this.

There's not many of us who could say they'd be willing to tackle tricky subjects like he has previously: mental illness, racism, cosmetic surgery, high-security prisons, the Westboro Baptist Church...

So don't worry, Louis. Letting fear defeat your desire to go to an actual war zone is totally fine. There's no judgements made here.
