Netflix has announced some exciting new cast additions for upcoming thriller Bad Bridgets. The Irish film will be led by Wuthering Heights star Alison Oliver, who was announced to be taking over from Daisy Edgar-Jones in March, as well as CODA's Emilia Jones.

In a new update, the streaming giant has added more huge Irish names to the cast, including The Penguin's Colin Farrell, About Time's Domhnall Gleeson, Calm with Horses star Niamh Algar and Simone Kirby.

There are also some British names, and they are big ones! We have Himesh Patel, Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton and all-round legend Steve Coogan, though it isn't clear who they will be playing (via Tudum).

The film will be written and directed by Rich Peppiatt, who previously worked with Kirby on Kneecap. Producing will be Margot Robbie's company LuckyChap Entertainment, alongside Peppiatt and Coup d'Etat. Executive producing will be Cáit Collins.

The film is inspired by Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick's non-fiction book Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women, which tells the stories of Irish immigrant women in New York in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

At the time, Irish women frequently outnumbered Irish men in prison, and 'Bridget' was the name given to Irish domestic servants.

The synopsis for the period crime thriller reads: "Bad Bridgets tells the story of two sisters who embark on a treacherous journey to the United States seeking escape from an abusive father, poverty and hunger."

"On arrival in New York, they fall in with a group of other Irish women, the so-called 'Bridgets,' who are creating mayhem in the city," it continues.

Bad Bridgets begins production on location in Northern Ireland and Ireland this summer. It was developed with support from Queen's University Belfast, and is being produced with support from Northern Ireland Screen.

Netflix is yet to announce a release date for Bad Bridgets.
