The BBC has announced that Ludwig has been renewed for a third season, ahead of its return this summer. The series, which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, became the broadcaster's biggest comedy launch in six years when it debuted in 2024.
The series sees Mitchell play puzzle-maker John 'Ludwig' Taylor, who pretends to be his identical police inspector brother after he goes missing. Maxwell Martin plays Lucy Betts-Taylor, John's sister-in-law.
Speaking about the renewal order, Mitchell said: "I am delighted that Ludwig will be returning to solve more of Mark Brotherhood's brilliant mysteries. I can't wait to get started and have renewed the subscription on my denouement-learning app."

Kenton Allen, Executive Producer and CEO of Big Talk Studios, said: "Ludwig has become one of those rare shows that genuinely cuts through — critically, commercially and internationally.
"At the heart of that success is the remarkable partnership between David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, brought to life by an exceptional creative team. In a crowded global market, for audiences to have embraced Ludwig on this scale feels incredibly special."

Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning, added: "Ludwig is exactly the kind of smart, distinctive, audience-pleasing show we love at BBC Comedy. Sharp writing, a compelling story, big laughs and, naturally, a generous helping of puzzles."
The detective comedy-drama is written and created by Mark Brotherhood, who previously worked on Death in Paradise. The supporting cast includes Sophie Willan, Mark Bonnar and Sian Clifford, with the latter pair joining the series for the upcoming second season.
The second season will arrive later this summer, and sees Ludwig in his new role as a Crime Scene Consultant while his brother is still missing. Though he has an official new duty, it may inhibit his abilities to search for his sibling.

The synopsis for the second season reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.
"Of course, John won't stop and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."
Ludwig airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
