David Mitchell is returning to solve more mysteries in the second season of Ludwig, reprising his role as the titular puzzle-setter. The award-winning series was a huge hit when it debuted in 2024, so it came as little surprise when the BBC recommissioned it just weeks after its premiere.

The first season introduced viewers to puzzle-maker John Taylor, better known by his pen name "Ludwig". A quiet and reclusive man, John spends his days creating puzzle books until his life is turned upside down by the disappearance of his detective twin brother, James.

James’ wife, Lucy (played by Anna Maxwell Martin), enlisted John’s help and persuaded him to impersonate James inside the Cambridge police force in an attempt to uncover what happened.

Thrown in at the deep end, John managed to keep up the deception while helping detectives solve a string of crimes thanks to his remarkable puzzle-solving skills. His true identity was eventually exposed after Lucy was wrongly imprisoned on suspicion of murder.

But rather than facing consequences, John was offered a permanent role as a police consultant, while the mystery surrounding James' disappearance deepened. In the closing moments of season one, John discovered a cryptic voicemail left by James, leading him, Lucy and her son Harry to a secret storage unit.

What can we expect from season 2 of Ludwig?

Ludwig’s second season picks up from the end of series one. John is working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola) as a Crime Scene Consultant on complex crimes. No longer having to pretend to be his brother, John lets loose.

But while he’s freed from having to impersonate James, his disappearance continues to hover like a dark cloud over his new life. Despite being employed by the police, John is forbidden from using any of their resources to look for James - but neither him nor Lucy will be ready to let the mystery go unsolved.

Together, the pair attempt to uncover the reasons behind James’ disappearance as well as who may be responsible for it. Much like its first season, Ludwig’s second series will feature Cambridge’s broody landscapes, with a plethora of ancient buildings acting as its main backdrop.

Speaking to Radio Times earlier in 2026, David Mitchell assured fans that James’ disappearance will be revisited in Ludwig’s second season. “A little bit yeah, that’s still carrying on,” he said. “They’re still trying to get their heads around what he’s doing and why he’s gone, and a little bit more of that mystery will be revealed.”

But there’s plenty more at stake for Ludwig. While working as a consultant, John is given the difficult task of covering up his impersonation of an appointed police officer. “If that ever gets out,” David added, “Well, five murderers will walk free, and he won’t walk free himself.”
