The Hairdresser Mysteries, the highly-anticipated new cosy crime drama starring Sally Phillips, has confirmed its release date. And in even better news, fans won't have to wait very long at all!

The BBC series is created and co-written by Jim Cartwright, and sees Bridget Jones star Phillips assume the central role of Lily Petal, an upmarket hairstylist in London who leaves the big city for a small town.

As she acclimates to her newfound surroundings in the north of England, Lily gets a shock as a spate of murders occur. She enlists the help of Clary (Charlotte Jordan), and the pair set about investigating.

After being announced in September, it has now been confirmed that the eagerly-awaited series will premiere on Friday 17 July. All six episodes will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 6am that day, while the first instalment airs at 2pm on BBC One.

In addition to Phillips and Jordan, the latter of whom played Daisy Midgeley on Coronation Street, the cast for the cosy crime drama includes Ben Castle-Gibb, Sunetra Sarker, Clive Rowe, Guy Henry and Wendi Peters.

As per the logline, Lily is described as a "modern-day hairdresser with an all-consuming love for everything 1970s". Out of the blue, she decides to ditch her "high-profile career" in a trendy London salon for the "charm of a small shop in a sleepy northern market town".

As she gets more than she bargained for with a slew of murders, she turns to "brilliant" assistant Clary, the "nosy but well-meaning gossip" Wincey (Sarker) and eager police constable Adam (Castle-Gibb) as she plays the role of amateur detective".

With her intuition and eye for detail, both born from her job as a hairdresser, making her quite the detective, Lily becomes the hub of "secrets and revelations" in her quaint little town - but will she be able to solve every case?

The Hairdresser Mysteries was commissioned alongside The Detection Club in the wake of the cancellation of long-running daytime medical soap opera Doctors, which aired its final episode in November 2024.

The Hairdresser Mysteries will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 17 July.
