New BBC crime drama The Hairdresser Mysteries has confirmed further casting with guest stars alongside a first look ahead of its July debut. The "nostalgic" Sally Phillips-starring show was first announced last year, and takes on an "upbeat 1970s spirit" as a city hairdresser relocates to a small village to buy a small salon.

The series comes from The Rise and Fall of Little Voice's Jim Cartwright, with Phillips taking on the role of central character Lily Petal.

"Everyone tells their hairdresser everything and soon she becomes the hub of her new village’s secrets and revelations," the premise teases. "Using her own brand of uncannily developed hairdressing intuitive, empathy and understanding, Lily begins to solve the mysteries of the village."

Among the guest stars fans can expect to see are Coronation Street's Wendi Peters as Gloria Crudd, a fellow newcomer to the village who is hoping to make a new start with an ice cream parlour – though her past threatens to catch up.

Also set to appear in regular roles are fellow former Corrie star Charlotte Jordan as Lily's "bright and analytical assistant" Clary Coombs ("the Watson to her Shear-lock Holmes") and You's Ben Castle-Gibb as eager young cop PC Adam Watson, who is in love with Clary.

The Hairdresser Mysteries was announced in the wake of Doctors' cancellation, with the new series being produced from the soap's West Midlands hub alongside The Detection Club.

"The West Midlands has so much home-grown talent in the drama sector, both on and off screen," commissioning editor for BBC Daytime, Helen Munson, said at the time.

"Commissioning The Detection Club and The Hairdresser Mysteries will offer more jobs to the region and showcase what the area has to offer."

She added: "I’m excited to be working on these mysterious crime dramas which will be enjoyed by all ages of audiences at any time of the day."

The Hairdresser Mysteries premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in July.
