Fans of Downton Abbey should check out a classic British period drama, which has jumped up the Netflix chart. Upstairs Downstairs originally aired between 2010 and 2012 for two seasons, and is a continuation of the classic '70s series of the same name.

Starting in 1936 London, it continues the story of 165 Eaton Place as Rose Buck (Jean Marsh) from the original show becomes housekeeper to new wealthy owners – portrayed by Keeley Hawes and Ed Stoppard.

Joining them in the ensemble are the likes of Claire Foy, Eileen Atkins, Alex Kingston, Anne Reid, Art Malik and Laura Haddock.

Upstairs Downstairs has now ascended to the Netflix Top 10 Series in the UK chart, currently sitting at the number seven spot ahead of the likes of Sweet Magnolias and Legends.

The revival series originally aired on BBC One and was overseen by Heidi Thomas, who would go on to create Call the Midwife for the broadcaster.

What to Read Next

Reviews of Upstairs Downstairs were mixed, NPR's Fresh Air suggesting it was "not weighed down with nostalgia or sentiment".

"There's some real danger dramatized here, and lots of shocks and twists – and just when you think you know these characters, they surprise or disappoint you," they added.

However, The Telegraph said that while it is "elegantly entertaining", it "doesn't quite reach the same heights as Downton Abbey".

Fan reception was more positive, one viewer on IMDb calling it "one of the best British TV series" they had "ever seen", adding: "I was sure that it was going to be a major disappointment as a remake of the classic 1970s TV series. However I am glad to say that I was very wrong."

Another called it "fabulous", elaborating: "The next generation of Upstairs Downstairs is excellent. The acting is superb. The scripts are superb. The Costumes are beautiful. Anyone finds fault is malcontent."

Upstairs Downstairs is streaming on Netflix.
