Olivia Cooke's hit series The Girlfriend is reportedly set to return for a new season. However, it appears that the show will be taking the anthology route.
The Prime Video psychological thriller first debuted last year, and follows Laura (Robin Wright), whose "perfect life begins to unravel" when her son Daniel (Laurie Davidson) brings home girlfriend Cherry (Cooke), and Laura quickly "becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something".
Deadline now reports that a follow-up is in the early stages of work titled The Boyfriend, which will be a standalone story with brand new characters. It will apparently be a "bold psychological thriller" that explores themes of masculinity.

There are no writers attached at the moment, but talks are happening. It is also unclear whether it will be related to Michelle Frances's novel The Girlfriend, which the first season is based on.
The last season was described as "sinister and addictive", and became a big hit for Prime Video, hitting the number one spot and continuing to trend weeks after its premiere.

It attracted an 87% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 47 reviews, Common Sense Media calling it "the very definition of binge-worthy drama".
"I love The Girlfriend’s soapy hyperreal campness: there are times when it’s as if Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were battling away, but with an age gap. Enjoy," wrote The Observer.
IndieWire added: "The Girlfriend is exactly the kind of psychological and soapy binge to kick off the fall TV season, easily devoured in one indulgent sitting with a cheeky drink and lots of yelling at the screen."
"The Girlfriend is, at the end, escapist trash," wrote RogerEbert.com. "But it’s glossy and richly satisfying trash, right up until the perfectly devilish epilogue."
iNews.co.uk said that while the series "crosses the line from camp over to stupid a little too much", it is "otherwise sexy and slick".
The Girlfriend is available to stream on Prime Video.
