The Girlfriend has snagged the number one spot on Prime Video's TV charts, following its premiere on 10 September. Still trending in the UK, the series has won widespread acclaim, with one viewer lauding it as "Satisfyingly wicked" on IMDb.
Led by Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke, The Girlfriend is based on Michelle Frances' bestselling novel. Introducing fans to Laura Sanderson (Wright), a wealthy woman living an idyllic life in London, the series takes a dark turn when her beloved son Daniel (Laurie Davidson) brings home his new girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke), triggering her suspicions.
Rounding out the cast, Waleed Zuaiter, Tanya Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin and Anna Chancellor also star.
The series, which holds a Certified Fresh rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, has been lauded for its compelling storyline. "While there's a smattering of class commentary and occasional attempts at deeper meaning, this is a drama that should be enjoyed for what is: a rollercoaster of fun and games," wrote The Times.
"The Girlfriend is exactly the kind of psychological and soapy binge to kick off the fall TV season, easily devoured in one indulgent sitting with a cheeky drink and lots of yelling at the screen," added IndieWire.

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph raved: "The Girlfriend has a lot going for it. Sanderson and Cooke have a sizzling chemistry and work brilliantly as a screen couple."
Equally impressed, Rolling Stone declared: "Wright and Cooke both understand the assignment, and the payoff to the rivalry feels worth the build-up. Not a deep story, but a fun one."
A series which has caused contention with its sixth and final episode, The Girlfriend's finale has become a major talking point. According to one IMDb user, "What lets this show down is the penultimate scene in the final episode..... no spoilers."
"Watch for yourself as it doesn't completely ruin the experience," they continued, "but it does make you think they could've written it better and the ending would still have the same impact."
Echoing this sentiment, another called the ending "lame" and "ridiculous" while describing The Girlfriend as a "well-produced, well-acted, and well-filmed series".
The Girlfriend is available to stream on Prime Video.
