A star-studded thriller dubbed "gripping" and "astonishing" is streaming now on Netflix.

The Beast in Me stars Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys alongside the likes of Brittany Snow, Natalie Morales, David Lyons, Deirdre O'Connell, Jonathan Banks, and Hettienne Park.

The series follows author Aggie Wiggs (Danes) struggling with a severe case of writer's block while her life falls apart around her.

But her luck seems to turn around when she finds an unlikely writing subject in her new neighbour, property developer Niles Jarvis (Rhys).

A synopsis reads: "A famous author is pulled into a twisted mind game with her rich, powerful new neighbor — who might be a murderer."

It has been described as "undeniably gripping" and "instant top-tier TV" since all eight episodes arrived on the streaming giant.

In their review, The Guardian said The Beast in Me was "astonishing", adding: "This taut psychological two-hander between Danes and Matthew Rhys will surely win awards. You cannot look away."

They continued: "The show is melodramatic and overripe but undeniably gripping – and Danes does nervy, self-destructive anguish quite brilliantly."

The New York Times also heaped praise on Danes, writing: "The Beast in Me is on one hand a soapy thriller with a Robert Durst type at its center in Nile, but Danes captures something more pedestrian in her take on Aggie.

"When Danes stares at her computer, faced with a miserable case of writer’s block, she embodies the stress and anxiety of being a late 40-something who wonders if they will ever make something worthwhile again."

However, The Radio Times said it was an "embarrassing blunder", adding: "The Beast in Me unites three actors whose work represents major pillars of the 'Peak TV' era – Claire Danes (Homeland), Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad) – but renders them all somewhat laughable."

The i Paper echoed a similar sentiment, writing: "Some viewers who start this will find themselves sufficiently invested to see it through to the end. But there will certainly be others – like me – who think The Beast In Me should have been put out of its misery long before it made it to Netflix."
