Motherland's "devastating" final episode is set to finally arrive on Netflix as the festive season approaches. The hit BBC comedy's three-season run has been available almost in its entirety on the streamer up until now – that is except the 2022 Christmas special.

Serving as its swansong, the episode was well received, though features a huge twist that takes the tone in a more sombre direction.

Fans wanting to catch it on Netflix will be able to do so, as the special is being added to the streamer soon. It is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer along with the rest of the show.

Fans praised the episode on social media, one calling it "absolute magic" on X around the time it was released three years ago, even if it left them "done in".

"There’s no way Motherland ends with the most devastating Christmas special," another echoed, while a third wrote: "The #Motherland Christmas special was unexpectedly heartbreaking and did the impossible by making me root for Amanda, brilliant and #hunderrated."

What to Read Next

While Motherland has come to an end, it has since produced its own spin-off Amandaland, which follows Lucy Punch's character Amanda as she downsizes with her kids to South Harlesden (or So-Ha).

Debuting earlier this year, the series also sees the returns of Joanna Lumley as Amanda's mother Felicity and Philippa Dunne as Anne – and fans will be pleased to hear that a Christmas special is on the way.

Confirming the news, Lumley recently teased on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show: "I'm just about to start another series of Amandaland. [It] was a gorgeous, wild success. Clever clever Lucy Punch.

"We're just about to start seven more episodes and one is a Christmas special for this year."

In other news, Motherland stars Diane Morgan and Paul Ready are set to reunite in new sitcom Ann Droid, which follows the "unlikely friendship" between an elderly widow and her robot helper.

Motherland is available to stream now on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
