Netflix has announced a new drama, based on the best-selling novel Grown Ups by Marian Keyes, with the cast including Line of Duty and Ridley star Adrian Dunbar.

The story is set in south county Dublin, and the synopsis reveals that it follows "the chaotic lives of the Casey clan, a noisy tight-knit Irish family, who are bound together by a tangled web of loyalty, resentment, money, memory and love".

Netflix's official description continues: "When the rock of the family, the 'good son', dies unexpectedly, it sets off a seismic emotional reckoning.

"Over the course of the next year, the Caseys will fall in and out of love, confront old wounds and make some new ones.

"They'll be forced to face not only their grief, but the exhausting, relentless, and often ridiculous struggle of being an adult. Despite their age and responsibilities, the Caseys are far from grown up."

What to Read Next

The novel on which the drama is based was published in 2020, and praised as being "alternately heartwarming and heartbreaking" by the Daily Mail.

A review in the Observer called it "superb" and "warm-hearted, wise and highly entertaining", while Guardian added that it was "comic, convincing and true".

Jojo Moyes, the best-selling author of Me Before You, said: "Messy, tangled complex humans who reminded me that few of us ever really sort our lives out at all."

Meanwhile, Graham Norton is quoted (via Amazon) as stating: "Magnificently messy lives, brilliantly untangled. Funny, tender and completely absorbing!"

Netflix's new drama adaptation, from writer and creator Samantha Strauss (Apple Cider Vinegar), has begun filming in and around Dublin, and more of the cast has also been confirmed.

Joining Dunbar will be Sarah Greene (Bad Sisters, Normal People), Aisling Bea (This Way Up, Doctor Who), Amy-Leigh Hickman (You, Our Girl), Barry Ward (The End of the F***ing World), Sinéad Cusack (Marcella), Karin Hanczewski (Call My Agent: Berlin), Robert Sheehan (Misfits), Katelyn Rose Downey (Clean Sweep) and newcomer James Agnew.

Strauss said: "I know I'm not alone in being obsessed with every word Marian Keyes has ever written, and it is a true life highlight to be trusted with her characters as we bring the Casey family and the world of Grown Ups to Netflix.

"James Griffiths, our set up director is already crafting something beautiful and very human. I am pinching myself to be in the company of our preposterously glorious cast and our fantastic crew as we shoot here in sunny Ireland."

Grown Ups is coming to Netflix.
