We Were Liars, a twisty thriller based on a bestselling novel, has landed on Prime Video.

The eight-part series is based on the "phenomenon" novel of the same name by E Lockhart and follows the story of Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Gossip Girl’s Emily Alyn Lind), a girl from a privileged family who holidays every summer with her extended family on their private island.

Alongside her cousins Johnny (Joseph Zad) and Mirren (Esther McGregor) and friend Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), the four call themselves ‘the liars’.

Cadence has amnesia after a strange accident she can’t remember and returns to the island a year later to try and find out what happened – with the truth making her question everything she thought she knew.

The show’s official synopsis reads: "One year after a mysterious accident left her with amnesia, 17-year-old Cadence returns to Beechwood, an island off Martha's Vineyard, seeking answers.

What to Read Next

"As three generations of the distinguished Sinclair family gather at their private summer utopia, no one will talk about the accident – neither her childhood friends 'The Liars' nor her first love Gat, forcing her to uncover the truth herself."

The original novel debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list on its release in 2014 and was given the green light by Amazon MGM Studios in March 2023.

Showrunner Julie Plec, who previously worked on The Vampire Diaries, said she hopes fans of the book will be “very, very happy”.

“I think we hit all the marks and all the beats that the book does, and then also expand the universe, layers upon layers upon layers to really make the adult characters really nuanced and really multi-layered,” she told Deadline.

She also teased a second series, which would likely be based on the novel’s prequel Family of Liars, adding: “Theoretically [it] is going to take us deeper into the moms’ lives as well and add another generation to the story.”

We Were Liars is streaming on Prime Video now.
