Gavin & Stacey and Barbie actor Rob Brydon will front a brand new comedy for the BBC.

Bill's Included will feature Brydon as Bill Beam, a middle-aged man described as "warm-hearted and eager but neurotic and slightly overbearing".

His divorce his left him financially struggling, so he makes ends meet by renting out the spare rooms in his house to some much younger students.

It's not just the age gap that leads to clashes, but also Bill's 'eccentricities': colour co-ordinated cutlery, a very strict bin rota, an insistence on group voting, and other house rules that he keeps laminated.

Despite all the differences, Bill and the students will find themselves bonding through their chaotic situation. They'll help each other through the surprisingly similar downsides of both university life and middle age.

"I can't wait to get started with this, to speak the wonderful words written by Alex [Owen] and Ben [Ashenden] who've done such a great job on the script," Brydon said.

Owen and Ashenden themselves added: "When we first met as students, we bonded over Human Remains and Marion and Geoff. To now be writing a show in which Rob Brydon lives with students is both a dream come true and a weirdly specific full circle moment.

"We're thrilled to be working with the amazing teams at Baby Cow and the BBC and can’t wait to bring Bill Beam to life. Bill's Included, you're invited, we're excited."

BBC Director of Comedy Jon Petrie further described it as "a warm, character-driven sitcom with genuine laughs and heart at its core", while Baby Cow Productions' executive producer Rupert Majendie called the show "a perfect sitcom set-up with a sharp, contemporary twist".

Meanwhile, Brydon has also been announced for the BBC adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's The Scarecrows' Wedding, which will air over Christmas, as well as new reality competition series Destination X.

Bill's Included season 1 will consist of six episodes and air on BBC One, and will stream on BBC iPlayer.
