ITV's beloved detective drama Midsomer Murders has officially kicked off production on its landmark 25th season.

Following the airing of its most recent episode in November last year, the show has been on hiatus after producers opted to skip a year of filming.

However, the show has now finally started filming its 25th season, which will consist of four new feature-length mysteries (via Variety).

The new season will see Neil Dudgeon reprise his role as DCI John Barnaby, alongside Nick Hendrix as DS Jamie Winter, Annette Badland as pathologist Dr. Fleur Perkins, and Fiona Dolman as Barnaby’s wife, Sarah.

"It’s fantastic to be filming Midsomer again. The scripts are all great, full of intrigue and mystery, so I’m very excited for you to see them," said Dudgeon, who has played DCI Barnaby since 2011.

He continued: "Our writers, who seem so normal, have come up with yet more extraordinary ways for the residents of Midsomer to despatch their neighbours, which is fun and slightly worrying; I work with these people!

"And, of course, the cast and crew are all back together, and it’s great to see everyone and hear all the news and gossip. It’s just like living in a village in Midsomer! I hope you all love them when they are finished."

Midsomer Murders aired its pilot in 1997, with the show featuring appearances from several famous faces over the years such as Olivia Colman, Imelda Staunton, Hugh Bonneville, Henry Cavill and Holly Willoughby.

Just last month, Dudgeon told Radio Times that he would remain on the show as long as bosses still want him.

"I'm very happy in the countryside there. It's very nice," he said. "I assume that at some point I'll get the hook - [it] will come and sort of drag me off into the wings and they won't want me anymore. But they haven't done it yet, so I'm going to keep going to work until I get the hook."

Midsomer Murders airs on ITV and streams on ITVX.
