Jason Watkins and Tala Gouveia have shared hope for their cancelled ITV drama McDonald & Dodds.

The series followed Before We Grow Old star Gouveia as DCI Lauren McDonald, a former Metropolitan Police investigator who arrives in Bath to lead the Avon and Somerset Police Criminal Investigation Department.

She is partnered with DS Dodds (Watkins), a shy investigator of more than 10 years who has not seen much action in the job.

It ran for four seasons before ITV announced earlier this year that the beloved crime drama had been cancelled.

Fans were left devastated, but McDonald & Dodds' lead stars have suggested a channel swap could save the show's future.

Speaking to Radio Times, Gouveia said: "I mean, you never know. There could be other channels that want to do it.

"I guess it all depends on the budgets people have because it is a show that people will watch. So of course it could find another home. I think we wouldn't mind having another stab."

Watkins added: "Who knows? I mean, one of the things that was the strength of the show was our relationship on screen and off. We're very close and I think that always showed on screen.

"That was one of the unique features of our show, that we genuinely have this great relationship. So if somebody wants to pick us up, then that's what we'd bring."

The fourth season ended with McDonald seemingly accepting her partner's wedding proposal, hinting at wedding bells for upcoming episodes.

However, Radio Times reported earlier this month that the show did not meet the threshold for recomissioning, and therefore would not continue.

As well as Gouveia and Watkins, McDonald & Dodds had an ensemble cast including Outnumbered star Claire Skinner as Chief Superintendent Mary Ormond and EastEnders' Charlie Chambers as DC Samuel Goldie.
