Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale has seen the return of Aaron Dingle after star Danny Miller took a break from the ITV soap to appear on The Celebrity Apprentice. After a month-long absence from the Dales, Aaron comes back home to his partner Robert Sugden only to find a new guest staying with them.

In scenes airing on ITV1 tonight, newcomer Serena Sugden immediately puts her foot in her mouth when she promises Aaron she'll be an excellent house guest as she's "nothing like John".

Understandably, Aaron gets tense when he realises Serena knows his ex-husband and village killer John and enquires about their relationship. Serena tries to play it down, saying she doesn't "really" know John apart from meeting him at the odd family function.

Concerned about Serena staying over as another member of the Sugden clan sneaks their way into their life, Aaron warns Robert against getting too close to her.

"She just wants to get to know our family," Robert tells Aaron, who hits back: "Does that not sound familiar to you?"

Annoyed with Robert for not sharing that Serena and John knew each other, Aaron asks him if there are any more "bombshells" he'd like to drop. Unfortunately for Aaron, there is more as Robert informs him that his prison husband, Kev Townsend, is back in the village after causing chaos and trying to win Robert back in the past.

Before Aaron can comment, Robert assures him that Kev isn't staying in the village for him this time around as he's looking to build a relationship with his biological son, Lewis Barton, instead. Robert adds that Kev has finally agreed to grant him a divorce, pleading with his partner not to worry.

"You don't need to worry about Kev. You don't need to worry about Serena. Just give her a chance, all right? That's all I'm asking you," Robert tells Aaron.

Later on, Serena tries to get on Aaron's good side but he keeps his guard up. As Serena insists that Robert has hardly any family in the village and wants to make the most of her being here, Aaron begins to cave.

It's decided that Serena will stay with them for a while but it's clear she has an agenda. In the final scenes at the Woolpack, Kev puts two and two together and states that he remembers Serena from prison.

"You're a screw, aren't you?" he tells her, but she feigns indifference and asks him not to bother her with his speculations.

What is she hiding?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
