Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's John Sugden finally uncovered some dirt that he can use against his half-brother Robert Sugden.

In tonight's episode, John sunk to a new level to try and unearth some secrets about his nemesis and was duly rewarded when he learned of Robert's recent criminal activity.

The episode began with Victoria telling Robert to seek professional help after another night of nightmares and calling out in his sleep. Robert told Victoria he wasn't interested in therapy and stormed back indoors.

John, meanwhile, had jogged past during the conversation and asked Victoria what just happened. She voiced her concerns about Robert and John agreed he needed help.

John offered to talk to Liam Cavanagh and get him to see Robert for a welfare check, appeasing Victoria.

Prior to Liam's visit though, John snuck into Keepers and planted a secret listening device to eavesdrop on the pair's conversation.

During Liam's visit, Robert opened up on his depression and traumatic prison experience, but was reluctant to seek help believing it wouldn't help him.

Liam continued to persuade Robert to try therapy and the conversation ended with Robert agreeing to come into the surgery for an appointment.

As Robert saw Liam out of the cottage, Ray Walters spied Robert from across the road and headed over for a chat, having been trying to locate him earlier in the episode.

John saw Robert's shocked reaction at Ray's arrival and immediately sought out a quiet place to listen in on the conversation.

At the Keepers, Ray asked Robert whether he had more weed to sell him, but Robert said it was a one time thing.

Ray reminded Robert about the cannabis theft, having stolen it from Lewis and Ross Barton and Mackenzie Boyd. They were growing it in the barn at Moira's farm before selling it on to Ray.

"Ross and Mack don't know I stole their weed stash," Robert told Ray. "You can't say anything. If they find out I screwed them over I'm finished."

The episode ended with John seen listening to Robert's confession and smirking at the revelation. How will John use this information against Robert?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
