Emmerdale spoilers follow from Thursday's episode (24 July), which is available to watch now on ITVX and YouTube but hasn't yet aired on ITV1.

Emmerdale has revealed one vital piece of evidence which could destroy John Sugden's cover story for Nate Robinson's suspicious death.

John is doing all he can to pin Nate's murder on a dead man – but there's a fatal flaw in his plan which is about to unravel.

In tonight's episode, John's brother Robert does some digging after realising that the explanation for Nate's murder seems far too convenient.

Robert's suspicions go into overdrive when Claudette Anderson mentions that John paid a home visit to Owen Michaels on the day he died.

John has made out that he knocked on Owen's door and received no answer, although viewers know that he went inside, found him dead and thought quickly by writing a fake suicide note.

The bogus letter claimed that Owen was struggling with his guilt for killing Nate and hiding the body. John – the real killer – hoped this would be enough to convince the police to close the case.

Thursday's scenes see Robert boldly contact Owen's brother Steve, hoping to raise the alarm that his sibling could have been innocent.

It turns out that Steve already knows this, but he'll struggle to let the police know without incriminating himself in criminal activity...

"I can't get involved either," Steve tells Robert. "The date the police said this Nate bloke was killed, me and O were doing a job up in Hull. Not the kind cops need to know about."

Robert replies: "You can still talk to them. You can say that you were in Hull with him, you just leave the rest out.

"You have to, for your brother's sake. You have to clear his name."

Will Steve listen to Robert's protests, or stay out of the Nate saga to protect himself?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
