Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale viewers were treated to a puzzle in the soap's new mystery concerning Joe Tate.

Tonight's one-hour episode started on a high note for Joe as the villain woke up next to Dawn Fletcher ahead of Lydia's birthday party that night.

But the new scenes had a nasty surprise in store for him. In a shock development, Joe got his comeuppance as he got pushed out of the window at Home Farm.

It's no secret that Joe did his best to anger as many people in the village as possible since his return to the Dales.

As previously revealed, nine characters are on the suspect list for his attack, with soap fans trying to work out which one could be the culprit.

"Love how there are SO many suspects for this!!" one fan noted on Instagram.

"I think it was Clemmie!! It will be too obvious if it's Noah!" another person said, thinking Dawn's daughter could be behind Joe's fall.

"He went TOO far with Jacob and Caleb. I will be glad to see the back of him," a third viewer wrote.

Meanwhile, Joe seems to have amassed quite the fan club, as some viewers voiced their disappointment at seeing him go.

"I know he's been problematic but I actually really liked Joe! I’ll be gutted if he is dead!! one fan wrote, while another offered: "Sorry but I really hope he is alive".

Before Joe's fall, the party turned tense when the villain's schemes were exposed by Noah Dingle. Earlier this week, Ruby Miligan told Charity that Joe was responsible for Noah's spiking ordeal and the double limo crash.

Charity told Noah, who decided to alert the authorities. Arriving at the party with two police detectives, Noah told the shocked guests he remembered what happened the night of the accident.

"I'm gonna kill him," Kerry said, realising it was Joe's fault that her daughter Amy died in the accident.

Kerry also worked out that Joe must've taken Caleb Miligan's kidney after feigning to care for him. Caleb and Ruby firmly denied, backed by Cain Dingle who uncharacteristically urged everyone not to jump to conclusions.

Later on, Chas demanded to know why Cain would defend Joe, forcing him, Caleb and Ruby to come clean about Anthony's death. They explained Joe knew but agreed to stay silent if they did the same.

In the kitchen, Joe managed to throw the detectives off the scent. He then cut the party short, though some of the guests stuck around for the grand finale.

Encouraged by Caleb, Billy Fletcher was set on giving Joe what he deserved after finding out about his affair with his wife Dawn.

At the party, Billy asked Dawn to dance and finally confronted her about her infidelity, which she admitted to.

Alone with Joe, Dawn demanded to know the truth. Cornered, Joe pulled his best convincing act to make sure Dawn believed him, insisting he never threatened Clemmie and that he got a kidney transplant in the US.

In the ominous finale, the camera panned to Joe lying unconscious on the pavement after someone pushed him out of the window. But which one of his enemies would go this far?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
