Emmerdale spoilers follow from Friday's episode (25 April), which is available to watch now on streaming service ITVX but hasn't yet aired on ITV1.

Emmerdale airs a brutal attack on Liam Cavanagh in Friday's episode as the soap's dark new killer storyline continues.

Liam finds himself caught in the crossfire of John Sugden's dangerous feud with Mackenzie Boyd.

Fans have been guessing over who'd have motives to target Liam, after dramatic spoiler pictures were released last week showing the local doctor unconscious after a mystery altercation.

All has now become clear, as the show's latest episode sees a case of mistaken identity unfold.

John is out to get Mackenzie following the mechanic's meddling in his relationship with Aaron Dingle.

Earlier this week, John was furious as Mackenzie uncovered his lies over Aidan Moore's fate and spilled the beans to Aaron.

In tonight's visit to the Dales, John is intrigued when he learns that Mackenzie is due to drop off some manure for Liam at the allotments at midday.

The sly schemer makes his excuses to leave work, claiming to feel unwell, and heads over to the allotments to enact a nasty plan.

When John spots someone hard at work in one of the sheds, he lies in wait and viciously hits them over the head with a plank of wood.

Much to John's horror, though, the man in question turns out to be Liam rather than Mackenzie.

Fans can see the full consequences of John's latest attack and what happens next when the episode airs at 7.30pm on ITV1 tonight. It's also streaming now on ITVX.

We already know that Ella Forster will become an early suspect for the attack after her acrimonious departure from the village.

However, early next week, PC Swirling confirms that Ella has a cast-iron alibi and couldn't be responsible. So, is John any closer to being caught out after causing chaos in the village with his sinister "hero complex"?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
