Emmerdale's Chas Dingle and Liam Cavanagh are full of worry next week, as the search continues for the culprit behind Liam's savage attack. Can the couple track down the dangerous criminal – or will they walk free forever?

Having suffered yet another life-threatening head trauma, Liam is determined to find out who launched the brutal bout of violence against him.

However, both the village doctor and his fiancé are left with no lead to go on when PC Swirling reveals that prime suspect Ella Forster has a strong alibi that proves her innocence…

"It's rarely great news when Swirling comes to visit," our Emmerdale source says.

"At first Chas and Liam suspect that Ella went back to finish what she started, but PC Swirling reveals that it couldn't have possibly been her.

"In some ways, it's reassuring to know that Ella hasn't been stalking the streets – but it does also mean that there's still a violent attacker still yet to be found. For all Liam and Chas know, they could be living in the village right beside them."

With no progress in sight, Liam and Chas can't help but feel overwhelmed by the stress hanging over their heads. But will they lean on each other for reassurance – or will the unresolved tension take its toll on their relationship?

"Liam and Chas are sick with worry. It should be one of the happiest times of their relationship, but instead they are panicking about the fact that someone out there wants Liam dead," our insider adds.

"And it certainly doesn't help matters that they haven't got the foggiest clue about who it could be. It really is the stuff of nightmares!"

Liam's attack takes place in this Friday's episode (25 April). Mackenzie Boyd panics when he finds Liam unconscious on the ground, with the culprit nowhere in sight.

Chas and Aaron then rush to the scene after being alerted to the vicious incident.

As pressure continues to build, will Liam ever uncover the identity of the mystery assailant? And if not, would he and Chas be wise to sleep with one eye open?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
