Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's 50th anniversary special has ended on a huge cliffhanger, leaving the lives of Kim Tate and Harriet Finch hanging in the balance.

The ITV soap celebrated its big birthday with a dramatic hour-long edition on Sunday (October 16), which focused on Kim's wedding to Will Taylor.

As the episode opened, Kim's future with Will seemed far from certain following her recent discovery that Harriet is desperately trying to win Will back.

With just hours to go before the ceremony, Kim and Will met at Home Farm for a make-or-break showdown over their future as a couple.

Will protested that he didn't want to be with Harriet. Taking a no-nonsense approach, Will told Kim that he'd be waiting for her at the church and their future was her choice, leaving her with a life-changing decision to make.

Kim then paid a visit to Harriet's house to confront her. A bitter row between the two love rivals escalated when Kim taunted Harriet, who grabbed her by the throat as things got out of hand.

Finally reassured that Harriet's feelings for Will were one-sided, Kim chose to go ahead with the ceremony.

Kim made an elegant entrance by arriving at the church on horseback. She was surprised when Harriet turned up at the church to make a discreet apology for her earlier behaviour, seemingly ending their feud.

Later, once the vows had been exchanged between Kim and Will, there was another unexpected turn of events that brought the love triangle back to the forefront.

News reached the village that pregnant teen Amelia Spencer had gone into labour out in the countryside amid the terrible storm that was brewing.

Amelia called her dad Dan for help but was unable to reveal her exact location before her phone died.

Harriet tried to take control of the situation by hopping onto a quad bike and searching for Amelia.

Kim wasn't far behind, deciding that she was best placed to help by conducting a search on horseback.

Harriet's heroics had terrible consequences when she crashed on the quad bike and found herself trapped underneath the vehicle, which had a dangerous petrol leak.

Kim stumbled across the disastrous scene but was unable to call for help due to the ongoing phone signal problems in the area.

Kim managed to free Harriet herself, but knew that she couldn't deal with the situation alone and considered heading back to Home Farm on her horse to get help.

Grimly expecting that these could be her last moments, Harriet begged Kim: "You can't leave me. You owe me this. You owe me. Don't leave me on my own. Stay with me."

Kim was determined to stick to her own plan, insisting: "Harriet, you're going to live."

Just as Kim was about to climb on top of her horse and ride off, the animal became startled by the chaotic weather conditions and ran away.

The quad bike was then hit by a fork of lightning and exploded, with the force of the blast hitting both Kim and Harriet.

Kim was knocked out as she violently hit her head on a rock, while Harriet also lost consciousness.

Will either of them survive?
