Having spent the last few days blaming half-sister Tracy Metcalfe for the death of their father in the recent factory fire, Emmerdale's most recent episode saw Vanessa Woodfield unexpectedly come to her sibling's aid when she's questioned by the police.

Viewers already know that Kerry and Amy Wyatt are responsible for the fire, which started when they tampered with the CCTV to cover their tracks after the stole the charity money from the factory safe.

But when the police discovered that the money was missing in tonight's (August 5) episode, officers decided to question Tracy (Amy Walsh) even further.

"I'm just trying to piece together the sequence of events," the detective told the devastated family, as Megan Macey (Gaynor Faye) pleaded: "How many times does she need to explain? She was waiting for Billy."

"Did you have access to the safe?" the officer eventually asked Tracy, prompting an angry Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) to interrupt the interrogation.

"Oh right, so your theory is Tracy broke into the safe, nicked the cash, set fire to the place and then locked herself in a cupboard," she spat.

"Back off and go and find who really did this! Tracy's a lot of things but she's not a criminal. Our dad's just died. No way am I having him pointing the finger at my little sister."

The whole situation also prompted Vanessa to apologise to Tracy for lashing out at her sister after Frank's death.

"I was out of order yesterday," she told her sister. "I've just lost my dad. I can't afford to lose my sister and all."

While Tracy didn't steal the money or start the fire, she has been left feeling guilty over her father's death after he died while saving her from the burning building, where she'd been planning to meet Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) when the fire broke out.

"My dad died because I wanted a quickie," Tracy told Megan earlier on in the episode. "How am I ever gonna live with myself? I caused his death. I don't even know why he was there!"

"Tracy is absolutely broken in the aftermath of this," Tracy actress Amy Walsh recently said.

"As you saw, she was trapped in a cupboard and [Frank] saved her, so she's got the guilt of that as well. She feels like it should have been her and it was her fault that he died. The reason she was in the cupboard was to meet Billy for a quickie, which just makes things even worse for her."

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
