2019 got off to a relatively quiet start in EastEnders, as Mel Owen and her son Hunter murdered Ray Kelly.

The teen was particularly disturbed by his actions and threatened to go to the police, but Mel convinced him that they should flee the country instead.

At the end of the episode, we saw Hunter with a gun in one room, while Mel knocked over a glass in the other. As the glass smashed on the floor, we heard a gunshot sound, and then the soap cut to the credits.

The purposefully vague nature of the scene has led some fans to believe that Hunter might have hurt himself, but don't worry, Digital Spy is here to explain why that isn't the case.

We can confirm the gunshot sound was actually part of Mel's imagination, the loud smash reminding her of what had taken place and serving as a sign that she may not be holding it together all that well.

Still don't believe us? Head on over to this article to see filming photos of a scene that's yet to air that features Hunter, who is very much alive and well (and in quite a bit of trouble with the police).
