Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has teased that the Weatherfield Precinct flats may eventually become home to certain characters.
The soap recently unveiled the first look at its newest set extension: the Weatherfield Precinct, the shopping centre that has been part of Corrie lore for years but has only now taken physical shape.
The Corrie episode airing on January 13, 2023, will be the first to take viewers to the Precinct, a two-storey building fitted with maisonette flats above shopping units.
"With every outside space, if we want a set for the inside, it has to go in the studios somewhere and they are full to bursting, but instantly we started to think, 'Maybe that character could live there, or when that character runs away from their partner, they could hide there,'" MacLeod said.
"We're definitely looking into the residential spaces and maybe people might move in there at some point."

MacLeod kept mum on specifics, not divulging which Corrie characters might pack up and move into a Precinct flat. For the moment, the ITV1 soap boss is more excited by what’s below the residential spaces at the Weatherfield Precinct — especially the charity shop where Evelyn Plummer and Roy Cropper will volunteer.
"Two core characters are going in there, and we're trying to install it as a new iconic destination," MacLeod shared. "Over the years, we've had brilliant double acts in the Kabin, most notably, but we're trying to achieve the same sort of thing in the charity shop, which is very exciting."

The Precinct also features a children's playground, a piazza, and other local shops. However, MacLeod noted, it isn't exactly a place you would want to be after sundown.
"It's the sort of place you might go in the daytime and buy an ice cream, but you might not want to go down there after dark because it might be full of kids up to no good," he noted. "It's got really fun bits [...] but it's also got the ginnels of doom, which is where all the bad stuff happens on Coronation Street — secret rendezvous, criminal assignations, and all the rest of it.
"It's got a little bit of everything. I went round it yesterday and was absolutely thrilled to pieces."
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
