Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman addresses Evelyn's on-screen absence

Dame Maureen Lipman has opened up on her character's recent absence from Coronation Street, revealing that Evelyn Plummer will be back in Weatherfield soon, as Lipman confirmed she is due back on set next week.

"Well I've been doing a play – a one-woman show – for 12 weeks, so I should be back in about six weeks on the screen," the actress said speaking to Digital Spy at the Inside Soap Awards 2022. "I'm actually going back [to work] on October 31."

As to whether Evelyn will be in a better mood than the one we left her in during her hasty exit from the cobbles after everyone putting upon her, that's another story.

"I doubt it. She's in a perpetual bad mood. Anything else is not really Evelyn. But I like her," Lipman shared.

"I find her to be a traditional, Northern battleaxe, if you want to call it that. But actually she's just a woman who knows her own mind. More often than not she's right. You don't want her to turn into a nice person."

Despite her character having a hard time adjusting to her new job at the charity shop, Lipman would love for the storyline to continue.

"I hope so, I think that's going to be quite funny."

At this year's Inside Soap Awards, the Corrie star was awarded the prize for Best Comic Performance as voted by fans.

"They've voted so I'm happy with that! I just do my job. I've been doing it for a very, very long time," she said.

"It's nice to come full circle to where Jack [Rosenthal] – my late husband [and Corrie screenwriter] – started obviously. He wrote episode 13 I think and now I'm doing episode 10,870!"
