Coronation Street's Alexandra Mardell lines up ITV comeback

Former Coronation Street star Alexandra Mardell has lined up her ITV comeback in new comedy series The Family Pile.

The actress exited the ITV soap as Emma Brooker back in April, and will now appear alongside Sherlock's Amanda Abbington as part of the upcoming show.

The Family Pile is described as a comedic exploration of a big life milestone, following four sisters who have lost their parents and are packing up the family home to sell.

The six-episode series is also set to star Downton Abbey's Clare Calbraith, The Trip's Claire Keelan, Ted Lasso's Kieran O'Brien, Cobra's Richard Pepple and Time's James Nelson-Joyce.

Reacting to being part of the show, Alexandra wrote on Twitter: "Had all the fun on this job!"

"I've definitely not drawn a line under it," she told Digital Spy and others. "I can see how people stay there for so long. I don't know what the future holds but I'm just so glad that Emma is still alive, and hopefully, she remains alive."

She added: "It would be so interesting to see how life experiences had changed her off-screen.

"It would be nice to see a more serious side and a more grown-up Emma but there's always got to be those little ditzy bits that come back, you can't have Emma and not have these silly one-liners, there's always got to be an element of that."

The Family Pile is due to air on ITV in 2023. Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
