Coronation Street star Charlie de Melo announces next role

Coronation Street favourite Charlie de Melo has shifted his attention to the theatre after bowing out as Imran Habeeb this month.

Over on Instagram yesterday (June 23), the ex-soap star uploaded a casting announcement for Nottingham Playhouse's production of The Clothes They Stood Up In, based on the book by Alan Bennett.

He'll be acting opposite Sophie Thompson (Harry Potter), Adrian Scarborough (Gavin & Stacey), Natasha Magigi (Anatomy of a Scandal) and newcomer Ned Costello.

"When I first announced to my (utterly bewildered) parents, about 1000 years ago, that I wanted to make a try at being an Actor, my Mum (presumably after the shock and disappointment had worn off) gave me three provisos, if this was the path I wished for myself. Three things she wanted for my life and career," read de Melo's caption.

"Very pleased to say that, as of today, I've ticked the second off that list. This theatre, with this material, with this combination of people involved. I can't wait to get started [red heart emoji]."

Speaking of Mardell, the actress was recently confirmed to be a part of BBC Radio's four-part comedy No Platformed.

Outnumbered's Hugh Dennis and Outlander's Tim Downie are also involved, with a synopsis teasing: "Three members of staff, one dysfunctional railway station, zero passengers. Brand new comedy that drives a train through sitcom-land via a platform crowded with big name cameos, absurd goings-on, and very silly jokes."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
