Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Sally Carman has admitted that she'd like her character Abi Franklin to cause trouble between popular couple Peter Barlow and Carla Connor.

Viewers have recently seen Peter supporting Abi through a relapse with her addiction issues, leaving Carla concerned about the possible consequences of their connection.

The two characters, who were in a casual relationship last year, have also been tipped for a big storyline together in the build-up to Corrie's 60th anniversary. However, show boss Iain MacLeod has confirmed that they won't have an affair.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media in a recent Zoom chat, Sally was asked whether there's still a spark between Abi and Peter.

She confirmed: "Yeah, there is. I absolutely believe there's that spark there with Peter Barlow because of what they had before. Abi was crazy about him and she liked that she recognised herself in him.

"They both have the same way of thinking and feeling, due to their addictions. Abi also likes the fact that Peter is a little bit off-centre and she's drawn to that."

On whether she'd like Abi to cause trouble for Peter's relationship, Sally laughed: "Oh yeah! Of course. I'd like Abi to be the one who stirs the pot between anybody. Absolutely, why not? Get in there!"

Sally also commented on who'd win in a fight between Abi and Carla if things ever turned violent over Peter: "Abi would kill her. The thing is, Carla is too refined and has too much self-respect to really let herself go. Abi is just like a little alley cat. She'll go for it and she has nothing to lose."

Abi is currently in a relationship with Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell), but next week's episodes see her confide in him about stealing morphine from the hospital. Kevin then has to decide whether he wants to stand by Abi or not.

Sally explained: "Kevin is getting to realise just how bad it was when Abi was in her addictions. There's a few moments where she talks about it and Kevin says: 'I had no idea it was that bad'. That's a worry.

"Let's face it, Kevin's longest relationship was with Sal, who couldn't be any more different to Abi.

"I think Abi loves the stability that Kevin provides. I don't think her heart is on fire for him. She's not thinking: 'Every day is crazy and wonderful and he sets my heart on fire'. But she is thinking: 'This is really, really lovely and secure. I feel safe and I feel I can trust this man. I've never had this with anyone before'.

"Abi recognises that Kevin is a good man and she's craving that. But how long she'll crave that for is another question. I don't think they'll last. I can't see it!"

Coronation Street currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
