Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has teased Billy Mayhew's new relationship storyline for the first time.

Earlier this month, we revealed that Gemma Winter's brother Paul Foreman will take a shine to the local vicar when he joins Weatherfield in the New Year.

Paul, played by Peter Ash, has already appeared in the ITV soap as he was David Platt's cellmate earlier this year.

His comeback storyline sees him turn up on the Platts' doorstep seeking help from David, before striking up a bond with Billy.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at a Corrie press event, MacLeod confirmed his intentions to make Paul and Billy an exciting new couple in 2019.

MacLeod explained: "Gemma’s twin brother Paul is like a male Gemma, but with even fewer of the rough edges smoothed off. He’s a bit of a rough diamond.

"He’s sexually forward, as vicar Billy will discover early on. They’ll go on to be an interesting, sexy, dynamic couple – it’s an iteration of the vicar with the bad boy.

"He brings so much fun and trouble into Billy’s life in a really light-hearted way. All of the early stuff I’m seeing is packed with sexual tension – they look instantly sexy together."

Corrie airs Paul's return scenes on New Year's Day in an hour-long episode.

Billy helps Paul to land a job at the factory, causing the bad boy to see him in a new light.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
