Kanye West never truly apologised for his controversial TMZ comments about how "slavery was a choice" until now. He went on a radio show yesterday (August 29) and spoke openly about the entire situation.

"I don't know if I properly apologised for how the slavery comment made people feel," he told the hosts at WGCI Chicago. "I'm sorry for the one-two effect of the MAGA [Make America Great Again] hat into the slave comment, and I'm sorry for people that felt let down by that moment."

He went on to say that his TMZ appearance is a perfect window into what it's like to live with bipolar disorder, which he was diagnosed with after his 2016 hospitalisation.

"I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to talk to you about the way I was thinking and what I was going through and what led me to that and I just appreciate you guys holding on to me as a family," he said.

Back in May, Kanye gave a now-infamous interview in the TMZ offices where he spoke about his relationship with Donald Trump and made comments about slavery.

"When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice," he said. "You were here for 400 years, and it's all of y'all?! It's, like, we're mentally in prison."

The criticism that followed was swift, but Kanye said through tears in this new interview that the downfall of "Kanye West" will be replaced by a better him.
