Filming pictures from Romy and Michele 2 have started to appear online, and they've revealed a surprising twist for one of its two main characters.

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are reprising their respective roles from 1997's Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, and although it looked like the ending set up Michele (Kudrow) finally getting together with Sandy Frink, that looks like things haven't played out.

In the photos from filming, we see a new character played by Keegan-Michael Key getting down on one knee and proposing to Michele. Of course, we don't know whether Michele will actually say yes.

One thing we do know about the sequel is that Alan Cumming is back as Sandy.

Will the movie show Sandy and Michele breaking up and getting back together by the end, or will she realise he's not The One and find happiness with this new man?

Key isn't the only actor joining the cast for sequel, as Breckin Meyer, Rob Huebel, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham have signed up.

Meanwhile, Janeane Garofalo (Heather), Camryn Manheim (Toby) and Julia Campbell (Christie) are all coming back from the first film as well.

In a feature celebrating the cult classic, Digital Spy said it deserves better than to be perceived as a 'dumb valley girl' movie.

"Actually, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is a subversive feminist masterpiece, a movie which honours but transcends its genre and is easily as meta, intelligent and groundbreaking as Scream was in the horror genre one year earlier," we wrote.

It's safe to say, we're excited for the sequel, even if it isn't getting a big screen release and is planned to go direct to streaming.

Romy and Michele 2 is set to release in 2027 on Hulu in the US, and Disney+ in the UK.
