Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys' upcoming thriller Hallow Road has released a nerve-racking first trailer.

The clip sees Pike's character and her husband, played by Rhys, receiving a call from their daughter Alice (Megan McDonnell). Frantically, Alice explains she's hit someone with her car and that this person isn't moving.

Alice's parents race to help her before she's seen, with Pike's character instructing her daughter to give the woman chest compressions and not let her die.

As the couple are headed towards their daughter, Alice, who stays on the phone throughout, is approached by a mysterious woman who offers to help but may hide a sinister agenda.

Directed by Babak Anvari from a script written William Gillies, the film received its world premiere at SXSW last month. It debuted with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, which has since gone down to 95%.

Critics who got to see Hallow Road ahead of general release, set for May 16, praised the engaging tone, the exploration of the intricacies of parents-children relationships and the tight runtime of 80 minutes which makes for a tense, urgent watch.

Recently, Pike has weighed in on her "frightening" return to the stage in Inter Alia, a play by Suzie Miller which delves into motherhood and modern masculinity.

"All through my 20s I was on stage a lot and it felt sort of natural and right, and now it's frightening," Pike told The One Show hosts Alex Jones and JB Gill in March.

"It's also about a mother raising a son, and I have two sons, so that's very close to my heart," Pike said of the play, which is set to debut in July at the National Theatre in London.

"And it's really about the juggle of life, and when you've given your life over to the law, is the law enough when things start to get rough? So it's challenging and exciting."

Miller also penned acclaimed play Prima Facie, starring Jodie Comer as a barrister defending people accused of sexual assault whose perspective shifts when she herself gets assaulted.

Hallow Road is released in cinemas on May 16.
