After Timothée Chalamet won at the SAG Awards, it was anybody's guess whether he would win Best Actor at the Oscars or Adrien Brody.

And it turns out that Chalamet had to make do with the SAG award as Brody took home the Actor in a Leading Role for The Brutalist.

Brody's win means he's become the first actor to win his first two nominations for Actor in a Leading Role. It also means he retains the record as the youngest-ever actor to win in this category.

"Thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love that I've felt from this world and every individual who has treated me with respect and appreciation. I feel so fortunate. Acting is a very fragile profession," he noted.

"It looks very glamourous and in certain moments it is, but the one thing that I've gained in having the privilege to come back here is to have some perspective. No matter where you are in your career, no matter what you've accomplished, it can all go away.

"I think what makes this night most special is the awareness of that and the gratitude that I have to still do the work that I love."

Brody's speech went on long enough to start getting played off, but he managed to get them to stop the music to allow him to thank his parents.

"They've created such a strong foundation of respect and kindness and a wonderful spirit, and they've given me the strength to pursue this dream," he concluded.

"I'm here once again to represent the lingering traumas and repercussions of war and systematic oppression and antisemitism and racism and othering, and I believe, I pray for a healthier and a happier and a more inclusive world.

"If the past can teach us anything, it's to not let hate go unchecked."

The duo were also up against Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes and Sebastian Stan, although it never seemed likely that any of them could provide a major upset on the night.

While the Best Actor category was up in the air, the supporting categories were easier to predict.

As expected, Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldaña won in their respective categories, capping off an awards race where they won at every major awards ceremony in the lead-up to the Oscars.

This year's Oscars opened with a spectacular performance from Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, while it also featured a dramatic tribute to James Bond with musical performances from Blackpink's Lisa, Doja Cat and Raye.
