Bride of Frankenstein has "nothing" to do with the Dark Universe, according to its director Bill Condon.

Universal's planned cinematic universe of all its classic monsters didn't exactly come back to life with The Mummy, which followed its original attempt to launch the franchise with Dracula Untold.

And now it seems the Bride of Frankenstein remake – previously described as a "story of a very modern woman in a very classic tale" – might not have any links to the Dark Universe.

"I will tell you this – what I'm doing is 100% making a really good monster movie. It has nothing to do with anything else. Nothing. Zero," Condon told Collider.

Last year, writer David Koepp talked up the feminist angle to the remake and Condon has enthused that the script "turns everything on its head", since the Bride (played by Elsa Lanchester) only appears at the end of the original 1935 movie.

"This is Eve before Adam, the bride comes first," he explained. "So I keep thinking [it's], in a way, at least a tribute to what [the director James] Whale might have done if he'd made a third Frankenstein movie and he'd done it in the 21st Century."

Javier Bardem has already signed on to play Frankenstein's Monster in the Dark Universe, with Angelina Jolie being rumoured for the Bride.

In a separate interview with Forbes, Condon confirmed that it's all just speculation at the moment. "Nothing is set yet. I think pretty soon but I think we're trying to figure that out now," he outlined.

Bride of Frankenstein is due to start filming in February 2018, so we shouldn't have to wait too long for a Bride announcement.

The remake is due in cinemas on February 14, 2019.
