Daisy Edgar-Jones may already have a stacked oeuvre with projects such as Normal People and Where the Crawdads Sing, but she's had to pull out of a "captivating" Irish period thriller due to unforeseen circumstances.

The actor was due to appear in Bad Bridgets, a big-screen adaptation of the 2023 non-fiction book, Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women, by Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick.

That won't come to fruition, however, as Edgar-Jones has withdrawn from the project due to scheduling conflicts. A replacement has been found quickly, with Saltburn and Wuthering Heights star Alison Oliver taking over the role (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The film will see Oliver appear alongside CODA and Task star Emilia Jones, with Kneecap director Rich Peppiatt helming the project. LuckyChap Entertainment, the production company founded by Margot Robbie, is also on board.

The book looks at the Bad Bridget phenomenon, which saw a swath of female Irish emigrants be imprisoned for troublemaking in the 19th century. Upon their research, the authors found that Irish female inmates outnumbered their male counterparts.

What to Read Next

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the period thriller sees a pair of sisters travel from the "famine-ravaged Ireland" to New York City in the 19th century, where they soon join their fellow emigrants in causing mayhem in the Big Apple.

Currently, there's no release date for the film, but Variety previously reported in October that filming would get under way in the spring of this year. It remains to be seen if that still stands, but one would think the thriller would come in late 2027 or early 2028.

Farrell and McCormick's book, which is billed as a "masterpiece of social history and true crime", has been praised by readers and critics alike, with The Sunday Independent calling it a "captivating account of lives previously ignored" (via Amazon).

While Edgar-Jones is no longer involved in this film, the actor did recently land another project, with the Fresh and On Swift Horses star set to lead an adaptation of Gabrielle Zevin’s best-selling novel Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow.

The story follows Sadie and Sam, two childhood friends who work together in the video game industry after they reconnect. The film will be directed by Siân Heder, while no further casting announcements have been made.

Bad Bridgets has no release date.
