Anne Hathaway's "stylish" psychological thriller Eileen is coming to Netflix next month on 4 October.

Released in 2023, Eileen stars Thomasin McKenzie as the titular young prison secretary in 1964 Massachusetts.

Eileen becomes enamoured by Rebecca (Hathaway), a new counsellor at her workplace, and the two strike up a friendship that is tested to its limits when Rebecca reveals a twisted secret.

The cast is rounded out by Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague, and is directed by William Oldroyd.

It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, and despite positive reviews from critics, it soon fell into obscurity due to its lukewarm box office run.

Eileen currently holds an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus reading: "Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie prove a well-matched duo in Eileen, which honors its source material with a twisty tale of obsession."

In its review, AV Club said: "Eileen is a stylish and wild ride that never lets up from its first frame to its shocking finale."

Chicago Reader described it as a "triumphant, a rousing directorial success from Oldroyd", while Breakfast All Day said it is "stylish, intense, and sexy".

San Jose Mercury wrote: "Eileen hits you at the two-thirds point with a huge surprise — it’s not a wowza, and it works, as does just about everything else in this demented and twisty thriller."

Meanwhile, The Washington Post added: "A film that is by turns darkly comic and disturbing, both sensations brought into vivid, caustic relief by the film’s mesmerizing star."

Eileen arrives on Netflix on 4 October, but in the meantime, several of Anne Hathaway's similarly highly rated films are available to stream right now.

Her highest rated film at 89% is Dark Waters, which tells the story of the real-life case that Robert Bilott brought against chemical manufacturing company DuPont over contaminated water.

The 2019 thriller can be streamed for free right now on BBC iPlayer, and is available to rent on BFI Player, Rakuten TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+.
