The upcoming sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue will be bringing back a major star as part of its cast.

The 2023 Prime Video film, based on Casey McQuiston's 2019 novel of the same name, depicted a romance between the son of the US president (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and a British prince (Nicholas Galitzine).

Boasting a stacked supporting cast including Stephen Fry and Uma Thurman, it was confirmed last year that a sequel to the romcom had been greenlit, though the nature of the plot has largely been kept under wraps.

Thurman, however, has confirmed that she will reprise her role as president Ellen Claremont in the sequel, with the actor telling Letterboxd: "When it’s ready, I will do it. We don’t know what Ellen will be up to, but she’ll be up to something!"

"It was a really fun role," she added. "That [the first film] was a joy… I like playing fun characters. I loved Ellen - [she] was great. To watch and even imagine that today - it's such an alternative, better world."

The first film, directed and co-written by Matthew López, was positively received by critics upon its release, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting an approval rating of 75% from 121 reviews.

In our review, we called the romcom a "winning", "frothy" and "feel-good" adaptation of a much-loved novel, adding: "It's jam-packed with enough romance tropes to muster that fuzzy and familiar feeling of any pleasingly formulaic on-screen love affair."

"Like a corgi back-flipping over a bathtub of champagne, Red, White & Royal Blue starts with a giddy premise and has the derring-do to succeed," wrote The New York Times, while Variety said the script contained several "funny zingers".

IndieWire was similarly positive as they dubbed the film "sweet", adding: "Red, White & Royal Blue is a hopeful, fresh twist on a genre that should charm both fans of the book as well as anyone who enjoys a frothy love tale."

"It’s earnest and easily watchable meme fodder that riffs on the classic enemies-to-lovers trope. And unlike some of its predecessors, it attempts to meaningfully situate its love story within the high-stakes arena of contemporary politics," noted The Atlantic.

Red, White & Royal Blue is streaming on Prime Video.
