Disney's divisive Snow White remake will be available to stream earlier than expected after its release date on Disney+ was confirmed.

The film, a live-action reimagining of the classic 1937 animation, sees Rachel Zegler portray the titular character, a princess who survives an assassination and begins a journey to reclaim her kingdom from the clutches of the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot).

Despite only hitting cinemas in March, it has been confirmed that Marc Webb's musical-fantasy will be available on Disney+ from 11 June, with the announcement coming less than three months after the film's theatrical release.

The move is somewhat surprising, with Disney films often being added onto the streaming service roughly 100 days after their theatrical release. We predicted that Snow White would be made available on Disney+ in late June or early July, but the company has acted swiftly.

The earlier release could be due to the disappointing critical and commercial reception, with the film considered a box office bomb after grossing $205 million against a rumoured production budget of $240-$270 million.

It also garnered mixed reviews from critics, with the film currently possessing an approval rating of 40% on Rotten Tomatoes from 258 reviews. It did fare better with audiences, however, attaining a creditable score of 71% from over 2500 ratings.

While Zegler's performance was widely praised, the film - like many of the other live-action remakes from Disney - was criticised for its failure to replicate the magic of its original version, with the extensive use of CGI being a point of contention.

In our review of the film, we wrote: "The dwarfs are CGI creations and never escape the uncanny valley issue… The remake's over-reliance on CGI extends to the general look of the movie too."

"Despite using practical sets, the 'magic hour' over-lit approach robs the setting – and also the strong costume design by Sandy Powell – of any vibrancy," we continued, adding that the film wasn't "radical enough" to "justify" its own existence.

Snow White will stream on Disney+ from 11 June.
