Ratatouille may be one of the most acclaimed animated films in the history of Pixar, but writer-director Brad Bird has confirmed that a sequel isn't likely to happen.

Released in 2007, the culinary comedy-drama is largely set in Paris and follows Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt), an ambitious rat who dreams of becoming a chef. He realises this in the unlikeliest of ways: by teaming up with a lowly garbage boy at a high-end restaurant.

While Pixar has developed sequels to Toy Story, Inside Out, and The Incredibles (also directed by Bird), the filmmaker has shared why he's reluctant to develop a follow-up to Ratatouille — despite willingness from studio bosses.

"They've made little feints towards that to see how I would react," he told Collider. "They'll, like, crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like, 'Would you?' And I'm like, 'No, we told that story'."

Bird, who also wrote and directed the beloved 1999 animated film The Iron Giant, then explained that he understands why fans have clamoured for a Ratatouille sequel.

What to Read Next

"Any time you do something that ends up connecting with people, they automatically think, 'How about another?' People have mentioned it about The Iron Giant, which is hilarious to me because the film didn't succeed at all in its initial release," he said.

Ratatouille was lauded by critics upon its release, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting a near-perfect approval rating of 96% from 251 reviews. (Shockingly, this is only good enough to rank at #10 on the list of Pixar films with the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores.)

On Metacritic, Ratatouille has a score of 96 from 37 reviews, which is the highest in Pixar's history. It also won Best Animated Feature at the 80th Academy Awards and grossed over $620 million at the box office.

Despite all that success, though, Bird feels the Ratatouille chapter is closed.

Thankfully for Pixar fans, there's plenty to enjoy and look forward to — including from Bird himself. Toy Story 5 now out in cinemas, Gatto is scheduled to be released next year, and Bird is set to pen the screenplay for 2028's The Incredibles 3.
