Disney's Snow White has earned a disappointingly soft debut, despite landing at the top of the US box office.

The live-action remake of the family classic arrived in cinemas this weekend, collecting $43 million from US audiences and $44.3 million internationally. The global launch of $87.3 million fell short of Snow White's projected $100m opening, Variety reports.

The movie has been subject to ongoing criticism prior to its premiere, but according to analysts, this didn't impact ticket sales.

"This is a situation that is never ideal," said senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "In the case of Snow White, kids and families likely just wanted to see a PG film and [were] perhaps unaware of the controversies."

Directed by Marc Webb, Snow White has received the lowest US debut to date for a Disney remake, sitting below 2019's Dumbo, which earned $45 million.

Other Disney remakes such as The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King all were much more successful, having opened above $100 million. The latter three went on to become billion-dollar blockbusters.

In our two-star review of Snow White, Digital Spy praised Rachel Zegler's "fully convincing" performance as the Disney princess, but highlighted the movie's "over-reliance on CGI"

Adding: "Despite using practical sets, the 'magic hour' overlit approach robs the setting – and also the strong costume design by Sandy Powell – of any vibrancy."

"Snow White ends up caught between trying to do its own thing, but not being radical enough to justify itself. It wants to be the fairest of them all, yet ends up being yet another disappointing remake."

Snow White is out now in cinemas.
