Avengers: Doomsday casting spoilers follow.

As Marvel (very slowly) unveiled the cast for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, fans noticed a huge, unexpected reunion on the horizon.

Several X-Men stars were confirmed to be returning to the fold, with the likes of Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X), Alan Cumming (Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler), Ian McKellen (Erik Magnus Lehnsherr/Magneto), Kelsey Grammer (Hank McCoy/Beast), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) and James Marsden (Scott Summers/Cyclops) all officially returning to the franchise.

X/Twitter users went into meltdown over the news, with many speculating we may finally see the X-Men back in full force after some stars made cameos in 2016's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

"THE OG XMEN ARE COMING BACK IM GETTING GOOSEBUMPS," one person tweeted.

"X-men returning to the big screen… i have prayed for days like these," another wrote, while a third excitedly shared: "ALL THE OG X-MEN ARE RETURNING SO FAR OMG."

"The X-men are coming back!! I’m freaking out rn!!" another fan shared.

It's yet to be confirmed if main stars Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Logan/Wolverine or Halle Berry will be back as Ororo Munroe/Storm.

The last time fans saw the OG 20th Century Fox X-Men cast on the big screen together was in 2006 when the gang appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand, and some of the stars have made no secret of the fact they'd be willing to return to the superhero fold.

Romijn was asked by Screen Rant in 2022 if she'd reprise her role as Mystique.

The former "Ugly Betty" star admitted: "Sure, absolutely! I don't know if they'd want me still, but I loved playing that character. I loved that cast so much. It was an incredible experience. Yeah, I'd be open to that. Absolutely."

Stewart also spoke about a potential return for his character in 2023 after we last saw him heading up the Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

He hinted at a return in the 2027 movie Avengers: Secret Wars, telling Etalk: "Hugh Jackman and I looked upon Logan as being our farewell, given that I died in that film. Although I've been told I've actually died several times already. Know that, and you could get lucky."

He added: "It is a possibility."

The return of the X-Men has been a hot topic recently, with Marvel previously confirming a new X-Men movie.

Last year, we got a huge update when Deadline reported that Michael Lesslie was in talks to write the script.

Avengers: Doomsday is released in cinemas on May 1, 2026.
