Thunderbolts* has confirmed a slightly earlier release date in the UK than expected.

The new movie follows a number of Marvel anti-heroes, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), as they team-up for a dangerous mission.

While the movie is set to be released in territories including the US on May 2, it's been confirmed that the UK will get to see the film a day earlier on May 1, according to the Film Distributor's Association (FDA).

Fans have been given previews of the film in a few trailers, the most recent of which excited viewers with a glimpse at villain Sentry, aka The Void (Lewis Pullman).

Meanwhile, the movie's biggest mystery – the title's asterisk – may have been unveiled by a tweet from Marvel's Japanese branch.

While sharing the movie's Japanese poster, English text at the bottom read: "*The Avengers are not available." They also wrote: "What is the hidden meaning behind the asterisk in the title?"

This suggests that the asterisk is more of a punchline about the Avengers not being able to save the day this time.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige previously teased at CinemaCon last year: "Yes, you'll notice the asterisk on Thunderbolts*. That is the official title of Thunderbolts* and we won't talk more about that until after the movie comes out."

Harbour also told ComicBook.com last year: "The asterisk was an idea that that someone had... The asterisk is very cool. I understand why people might put an asterisk there. I'm excited for the viewers to see that as well."

Thunderbolts* will be released in UK cinemas on May 1, and US cinemas on May 2.
